Thoughts on the Mexico Trip

The weekend in Mexico was a straight-forward project. Nineteen men were able to respond to the call this weekend. Many others wanted but could not participate this time but will participate on future trips. The call was simple: Give yourself away: commit money; commit time; commit physical energy and effort.

I almost lost the beauty of the mission by getting wrapped up in the many layers of preparation: planning the work; securing housing; ordering of materials; recruiting a team; arranging logistical support for the team; and of course, the paper work and administration. Fortunately, I didn't drive on the way home and had an opportunity to reflect. The most important aspect of the project was not the lumber we hammered together. The most important aspect was the hope and promise the team delivered to a sister church and community. We joined the international Nazarene church in validating the Maneaderos vision of how they can best do God's work. The educational building isn't meant just to serve their 150 member congregation. This building will also be occupied during the week with pre-seminary students preparing to bring Jesus Christ to the Baja California community.

Nineteen men gave themselves away and I truly enjoyed being part of that. The team members had no quit in them. They met the challenge with vigor and humor. It may be satisfying to leave a building as a monument of our efforts but we realized it was not about us. It's about God will to be done in us and in Maneaderos, Mexico.
